With the generous support of the DHS Student Travel Award, I had the opportunity to visit Tokyo for a week in May 2017. The primary and secondary sources I collected during this trip will form the core evidence for my research on the identity of modern Japanese women during the interwar period.

In February 2017, the Design History Society held its inaugural panel as affiliate at the College Art Association conference in New York. The panel, titled 'Beyond Boundaries: Art and Design Exhibitions as Transnational Exchange from 1945', was co-chaired by Dr Harriet Atkinson (University of Brighton), Dr Sarah Lichtman (Parsons The New School), and Dr Verity Clarkson (University of Brighton).

Histories of Italian fashion have often highlighted the lives and careers of couturiers and individual stilisti, or the relevance of centres of Italian fashion at particular moments; however, the investigation of the actual material that constructs fashion - that is, textiles and their fibres - are overlooked.
