Vacancy: Stride Lectureship in Arts Conservation Faculty of Arts, Design and Social Sciences, Northumbria University

The Department of Arts is looking to appoint an experienced Art Conservator with the skills and experience to lead and deliver art conservation modules and research projects. In particular we are looking for candidates with research and teaching expertise which focuses on interventive conservation and/or preventive conservation.

Northumbria offers Masters in the Conservation of Fine Art as well as Preventive Conservation. The well-equipped science laboratories and conservation studios support the development of practical skills and provide the opportunity for analytical research. Analysis can be conducted using photographic imaging, microscopy, FTIR, GCMS, XRF and X-Ray. We are in the process of expanding our Asian Art Collection with a collection from Southeast Asia, which includes textiles, bronzes, painted textiles, krises, jewellery and ceramics. We are looking for applicants who would be capable of teaching into the Conservation of Fine Art MA whilst introducing a new strand with a focus on Asian art such as painted textiles or thangkas.

The Stride Lecturer in Art Conservation will be part of a team that will deliver research-informed learning and teaching at all levels of Higher Education. You will be able to demonstrate expertise and knowledge of current issues in Art Conservation and be able to teach flexibly and effectively using an appropriate variety of approaches to maximize student learning in both a real and virtual environment.

You will make a significant contribution to the development of high quality research and knowledge exchange within the Department and Faculty, initiate new research projects and generate external income.

You should have a track-record of practice led work and/or publications appropriate to your experience and feasible plans for future high-quality research outputs for submission to REF2021. Role holders appointed who have not undertaken or completed PhD study, will be required to register and complete a PhD within a reasonable timescale of appointment. This will be discussed with candidates upon appointment and will be a condition of employment.

The Department of Arts is ranked in the top 20 in the UK (Art and Design). The quality and depth of the curriculum is reinforced by a dynamic research and enterprise culture, covering all aspects of the work of our staff and students. The largest programme in the Department is BA Film and TV Production, the Department is also home to programmes from BA Film and TV Studies, BA Fine Art, BA Animation, BA Drama to postgraduate taught programmes in Creative and Cultural Industries and in Art Conservation. The three subject areas within the Department of Arts are Art (Fine Art, Visual and Cultural Studies, Art Conservation), Drama, and Film (Film and TV production, Film and TV studies, and Animation).

We have long established relationships with cultural and creative organisations with whom we deliver programmes and research. Our Woon Collection of Asian Art is supported by Louise Tythacott, Woon Tai Jee Professor of Asian Art, as well as a Visiting Professor, John Clarke, Curator of the Tibetan and Southeast Asian Collections at the V&A. These include Bowes Museum, Channel Four, LIVE Theatre, The National Trust, Tate Modern, Tyneside Cinema, Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums. Arts is the home of Northumbria’s unique partnership with the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead – the BxNU Institute. The BxNU Institute of Contemporary Art is situated in BALTIC 39, a purpose built studio and exhibition complex in the centre of the city from which we deliver several postgraduate programmes, including an MFA programme and work together on a shared research agenda, led by BALTIC Professor and Director of the Institute Professor Andrea Phillips.
